CESDR Disaster Resilience Unit members served as resource lecturers in DRRID Graduate Forum

CIV680M/D, a graduate seminar on Disaster Risk Reduction and Infrastructure Development (DRRID) is one of the integration courses in the graduate program in civil engineering. In this course, graduate students in civil engineering from various specializations and other allied programs apply their knowledge and skills to address the impact of natural hazards on the built environment, to explore ways of reducing the adverse effects of the natural hazards and to improve and build infrastructure and community resilience. 

Members of the CESDR Disaster Resilience Unit served as resource lecturers in the DRRID Graduate Seminar. Serving as resource lecturers in the course during Term 2 of AY 2019-2020 (shown below)  were Dr. Renan Tanhueco, Dr. Mario De Leon, Dr. Maricel Paringit, Dr.Jonathan Dungca, Dr. Nicanor Roxas, Jr. and Richard De Jesus. Invited to share research outputs are graduate students, Raymund Abad and Patrick Ngo. The course was facilitated by Dr. Andres Oreta, the leader of CESDR DR Unit and Professor of the Civil Engineering Department.

 

CESDR Members at PASCDR - 1st Academic Conference 2019

CESDR Disaster Resilient Unit members, Dr. Andres Oreta and Dr. Lessandro Garciano attended the Philippine Academic Society for Climate and Disaster Resilience (PASCDR) Academic Conference with theme on "Strengthening the role of academe in climate and disaster resileince" held on November 27-28, 2019 at the University of the Philippines International Center for Public Administration. Dr. Garciano presented on "Initiatives and networking activities of Disaster Resilience Unit of CESDR" in the Session 4 on Enhancing Technologies fro Resilience Architecture, Engineering and Technology. Dr. Oreta served as moderator in this session.

Incidentally, DLSU faculty members, Dr. Marites Tiongco (Moderator of Session 5), Dr. Brian Gozun (Speaker in Session 5) and Dr. Marlon Era (Speaker of Session 2) also participated.

Prior to this conference, DLSU Faculty, Dr. Jonathan Dungca, Dr. Ann Dulay, Dr. Mike Promentilla, Dr. Bernardo Lejano, Dr. Andres Oreta and  Dr.Marites Tiongco attended the Forum on the 10th year Commemoratin of Typhoon Ondoy on 26 Sept 2019 at UP Manila, Museum of a History of Ideas. Dr. Ann Dulay and Dr. Maricel Paringit attended the 3rd UPRI-NOAH TALK on Resiliency. The talk bearing the theme “Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction in the Philippines” was held at the Multipurpose Room (Rm 301) of the National Institute of Geological Sciences, University of the Philippines Diliman, Quezon City on Wednesday, September 25, 2019 at 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

Members of the Disaster Resilience Unit of the Center for Engineering & Sustainable Development Research (CESDR) of the DLSU attended a forum on the commemoration of the 10th year of Typhoon Ondoy last Sept 26. 2019 at the Museaum of a History of Ideas, UP Manila. GCOE Dean Dr. Jonathan Dungca, ChE Professor, Dr. Mike Prometilla, CE Professor, Dr. Bernardo Lejano, ECE Associate Professor, Dr. Ann Dulay and CE Professor and CESDR DR unit leader, Prof. Andres Oreta including College of Business Economics Dean, Prof. Marites Tiongco represented DLSU in the forum. Aside from commemorating Typhoon Ondoy, the event also introduced the plan to organize a Philippine Academic Society for Climate and Disaster Resilience.

CESDR co-organized a Symposium on Multi-Hazards Assessment of Heritage Structures at CPU, Iloilo City

Last June 22, 2019 CESDR organized with Central Philippine University (CPU), Iloilo City and University of the Philippines Visayas a symposium on “Multi-Hazard Assessment of Heritage Buildings (The Case of Iloilo City).” This symposium was held in preparation to the Newton Institutional Links project with University College London on Cultural Heritage Resilience & Sustainability to Multi-Hazards (CHeRiSH) where DLSU is a cooperating institution. Three CESDR Disaster Resilience Unit members delivered lectures during the symposium” 

• Dr. Andres Winston C. Oreta - Structural Engineering & Heritage Preservation and Overview of Multi-Hazards Assessment of Heritage Structures (The Case of Iloilo City)
• Dr. Rodolfo Mendoza, Jr. - Structural Evaluation, NDT & Semi-Destructive Testing of Heritage Structures
•  Engr. Richard De Jesus - Researches on Heritage Structures at DLSU CE Department

Engr. Mary Earl Daryl Grio (Head, Civil Engineering Dept., CPU) presented about seismic and fire hazards assessment. Dr. Rhodella Ibabao of the Dept.. of Management, UPVisayas and Philippine project leader of CHeRiSH project gave  an overview of the objecties and outcomes of the  CHeRiSH project. Arch. Wilfredo Sy, Jr. of the Iloilo Heritage Council attended and participated in the open forum.

After the symposium, a lunch meeting was hosted by CPU and UPV to discuss the preparations for the July 15 CHeRiSH Project Stakeholders; Meeting and the July 16-19 CHeRiSH Data Gathering with UCL.  DLSU members, Oreta and De Jesus will attend the July 15 meeting and De Jesus will be part of the survey team for the data gathering.

After the lunch meeting, a tour of the heritage buildings on Iloilo City’s Calle Real, the project site was conducted by Arch Sy.

Tour of the Heritage Structrures

RTD with University of Huddersfield

CESDR Disaster Resilient Unit (DRU) held a Round Table Discussion with University of Huddersfield (HUD), UK professors, Dr. Dilanthi Amaratunga and Dr. Richard Haigh and HUD Researcher, Dr. Nuwan Dias on March 26, 2019, 5:30 - 7:00 PM at DLSU Velasco Hall V512.

Dr. Andy Oreta, OIC of the CESDR DRU first presented an update on the unit's recent activities and on the Newton - Agham Workshop on Localising Strategies on Making Cities Resilient to Disasters which was co-organized with HUD last Jan 2017.  Dr. Nuwan Dias presented their project which focuses on Strategies and Challenges on DRR-CCA intergration. An open discussion followed after where Dr. Mike Promentilla served as facilitator.

Dr. Alvin Cukaba, CESDR Director, Dr. Lessandro Garciano (CE Dept. Chair), Dr. Alvin Chua (ME Dept. chair) Dr. Tarroja (SDRC Director) and Dr. Marlon Era (Faculty of BSD and PH Chair of the CABARET project) attended the forum. Members of the CESDR DRU supported the event.

The RTD resulted on plans for future collaboration. An MOU was suggested to be formulated. Prof. Dilanthi and Prof. Haigh have future proposals and they will explore a collaboration with DLSU.

CESDR Disaster Resilience Unit members presented papers at the International Symposium on Disaster Resilience and Sustainable Development (DRSD 2019) held on March 7-8, 2019 at the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand. The CESDR members presented the following papers:

The DRSD2019 was organized by the Disaster Preparedness, Mitigation and Management of AIT. It was also co-organized by the United Nations University, Prosper.net, Miyagi University of Education, Keio University, Universti Sains Malaysia and IRDR.
