CESDR Members Oreta and Redillas - Speakers at OCD DRRM Webinars

 CESDR Disaster Resilient Unit members, Dr. Andres Winston Oreta and Dr. Marla Redillas delivered virtual presentations in DRRM Webinars hosted by the Office of Civil Defense, the government office administering the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).  Dr. Oreta presented in the School-Based DRRM Webinar on "S.O.S. Tips Infographics: Strengthening ORDER in Schools" on 3 Sept 2021. S.O.S. Tips Infographics: Strengthening ORDER in Schools

Schools are powerful symbols of progress and development. Schools represent our children – the nation’s hope for the future – and their education. In recent disasters in the Philippines, many school buildings were damaged due to various natural hazards like earthquakes, floods, landslides and typhoon causing a number of casualties. Creating “safe school” involves an integrated strategy among the stakeholders. Aside from assuring that school buildings are safe and sound during a hazardous event, a safe school must promote a culture of safety where the students and teachers are aware of the risks to hazards and prepared to respond during emergencies and emergencies. Hence, this presentation highlights the SOS Tips Infographics, one of the components of the project on “Strengthening ORDER in Schools (S.O.S).”  The S.O.S.  Project is part of the “Philippines Resilience of Schools to Multi Hazard” or PRISMH project funded by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and has a component on the development of materials for Organizational Resilience in Disasters & Emergency Response (ORDER).

The SOS Tips Infographics aims to increase awareness of school children and teachers on what to do before, during, and after a hazardous event such as earthquakes, strong winds, typhoons and floods. The S.O.S. Tips infographics are of three modules: (a) S.O.S. Tips on Emergency Evacuation, (b) S.O.S. Tips on Wind, Typhoon and Flood and (c) S.O.S. Tips on Earthquakes.

The S.O.S. Tips on Emergency Evacuation emphasize that an evacuation site and evacuation route are critical components in a school emergency and disaster preparedness plan. Hence, this module provides simple tips on identifying the evacuation assembly area and/or sites and evacuation routes based on hazards and simple rules during evacuation that students must follow. 

The S.O.S. Tips on Wind, Typhoon and Flood provide tips on what do during and after the hazardous event whether inside the classroom or outside the school building. 

The S.O.S. Tips on Earthquakes also provide guidance to students on what to during an earthquake if indoors or outdoors and what to do after the earthquake ground shaking. 

The S.O.S. Tips Infographics are appropriate not only to school children in grade school or high school but even to college students since the messages are general. The infographics design is simple with meaningful cartoon images and catchy and readable texts. The infographics can be adopted in the school curriculum as a teaching and learning material in the subject on Disaster Readiness and Risk Reduction.

PRISMH and CHERISH Projects presented at the 20th ASEP International Convention - 22 May 2021

Dr. Carmine Gallaso of University College London presented a keynote lecture on two Newton-Agham Institutional - CHED Projects - PRISMH or Philippine Resilience of Schools to Multiple Hazards and CHERISH or Cultural Heritage Resilience and Sustainability to Multiple Hazards. The keynote lecture highlights the "New Technologies and Digital Tools for Assessing Multi-Hazard Risk of Community Assets."

Three papers that are outputs from research supported by the CESDR Disaster Resilience Unit were also  presented at the 20th ASEP International Convention (AIC2021) on 20-22 May 2021. 

Engr, Samantha Jarder, BSCE and MSCE graduate of DLSU, Manila and presently a PhD student at Tokyo City University presented the paper on "Toolkits for Strengthening ORDER in Schools or SOS" at the 20th ASEP International Convention (AIC2021) on 22 May 2021. The co-authors of the paper consist of  DLSU Civil Engineering faculty, graduate and undergraduate students. The SOS project is a component of the PRISMH Project funded by CHED under the Newton-Agham Research Institutional Links. The faculty researchers include Dr. Lessandro Garciano (Principal Proponent), Dr. Andres Oreta and Engr. Richard De Jesus. The PRISMH Project is a collaboration among universities - University College London, DLSU and Xavier University - CDO. 

Engr. Sheena Fulleros, M.Eng. graduate of DLSU, Manila presented the paper on "Rapid Assessment of Hazards, Safety and Sustainability (RAHSS) of RC Buildings: Case Study Survey on Public Buildings in Sorsogon." The paper is based on her Practicum Report as researcher of CESDR DRU under Dr. Oreta. 

Engr. Dexter Lo, MSCE graduate of DLSU and Founding Director, XU Engineering Resource Center, Xavier University Manila  presented a paper on “Seismic Fragility of Selected Public High School Buildings in Cagayan de Oro City”, a paper also under the PRISMH Project. 

CHERISH SEMINAR/WORKSHOP - 30 April 2021

 University of the Philippines Visayas Iloilo, De La Salle University - Manila (DLSU-Manila), Central Philippine University and University College London in cooperation with the LGU- Iloilo City is conducting the CHERISH SEMINAR/WORKSHOP ON SEISMIC HAZARD ASSESSMENT & RAPID VISUAL SURVEY OF EXISTING (HERITAGE) BUILDINGS on April 30, 2021 (8:30 AM to 4:30 PM) via Zoom.

CHERISH or Cultural Heritage Resilience and Sustainability to multiple Hazards is project funded by CHED and the Newton Fund. The objectives of the activity are (a) To enhance the capability of the academe, the LGU, and relevant institutions to conduct Rapid Visual Survey (RVS) of buildings with an emphasis on previously assessed Heritage Buildings in Calle Real in seismic risk assessment, and (b) To get feedback from the participants about the modules, RVS checklist, and related policies.

CESDR Disaster Resilient Unit members - Dr. Andres Oreta, Dr. Lessandro Garciano, Engr. Richard De Jesus and Dr. Rodolfo Mendoza, Jr. are the DLSU researchers for this project and will serve as speakers/trainors. 

WEBINAR on ICT for Disaster Risk Reduction & Management for SHS Faculty and Students

Members of the CESDR Disaster Resilience Unit and the URCO RPW on ICT4DR served as resource speakers in the DR&RR Webinar: Information and Communications Technology for DRRM held on August 8, 2020 (Saturday), 9:00AM - 11:30AM via Google Meet and Live Stream. 

The webinar's participants are the faculty and students of DLSU Senior High School students who are taking the course on Disaster Readiness & Risk Reduction (DISREAD). The webinar was coordinated by Kenneth Toral of the CE Department and a teacher of DISREAD and Dr. Andy Oreta of CESDR DRU.

CESDR Disaster Resilience Unit members served as resource lecturers in DRRID Graduate Forum

CIV680M/D, a graduate seminar on Disaster Risk Reduction and Infrastructure Development (DRRID) is one of the integration courses in the graduate program in civil engineering. In this course, graduate students in civil engineering from various specializations and other allied programs apply their knowledge and skills to address the impact of natural hazards on the built environment, to explore ways of reducing the adverse effects of the natural hazards and to improve and build infrastructure and community resilience. 

Members of the CESDR Disaster Resilience Unit served as resource lecturers in the DRRID Graduate Seminar. Serving as resource lecturers in the course during Term 2 of AY 2019-2020 (shown below)  were Dr. Renan Tanhueco, Dr. Mario De Leon, Dr. Maricel Paringit, Dr.Jonathan Dungca, Dr. Nicanor Roxas, Jr. and Richard De Jesus. Invited to share research outputs are graduate students, Raymund Abad and Patrick Ngo. The course was facilitated by Dr. Andres Oreta, the leader of CESDR DR Unit and Professor of the Civil Engineering Department.

 

CESDR Members at PASCDR - 1st Academic Conference 2019

CESDR Disaster Resilient Unit members, Dr. Andres Oreta and Dr. Lessandro Garciano attended the Philippine Academic Society for Climate and Disaster Resilience (PASCDR) Academic Conference with theme on "Strengthening the role of academe in climate and disaster resileince" held on November 27-28, 2019 at the University of the Philippines International Center for Public Administration. Dr. Garciano presented on "Initiatives and networking activities of Disaster Resilience Unit of CESDR" in the Session 4 on Enhancing Technologies fro Resilience Architecture, Engineering and Technology. Dr. Oreta served as moderator in this session.

Incidentally, DLSU faculty members, Dr. Marites Tiongco (Moderator of Session 5), Dr. Brian Gozun (Speaker in Session 5) and Dr. Marlon Era (Speaker of Session 2) also participated.

Prior to this conference, DLSU Faculty, Dr. Jonathan Dungca, Dr. Ann Dulay, Dr. Mike Promentilla, Dr. Bernardo Lejano, Dr. Andres Oreta and  Dr.Marites Tiongco attended the Forum on the 10th year Commemoratin of Typhoon Ondoy on 26 Sept 2019 at UP Manila, Museum of a History of Ideas.
