PRISMH and CHERISH Projects presented at the 20th ASEP International Convention - 22 May 2021

Dr. Carmine Gallaso of University College London presented a keynote lecture on two Newton-Agham Institutional - CHED Projects - PRISMH or Philippine Resilience of Schools to Multiple Hazards and CHERISH or Cultural Heritage Resilience and Sustainability to Multiple Hazards. The keynote lecture highlights the "New Technologies and Digital Tools for Assessing Multi-Hazard Risk of Community Assets."

Three papers that are outputs from research supported by the CESDR Disaster Resilience Unit were also  presented at the 20th ASEP International Convention (AIC2021) on 20-22 May 2021. 

Engr, Samantha Jarder, BSCE and MSCE graduate of DLSU, Manila and presently a PhD student at Tokyo City University presented the paper on "Toolkits for Strengthening ORDER in Schools or SOS" at the 20th ASEP International Convention (AIC2021) on 22 May 2021. The co-authors of the paper consist of  DLSU Civil Engineering faculty, graduate and undergraduate students. The SOS project is a component of the PRISMH Project funded by CHED under the Newton-Agham Research Institutional Links. The faculty researchers include Dr. Lessandro Garciano (Principal Proponent), Dr. Andres Oreta and Engr. Richard De Jesus. The PRISMH Project is a collaboration among universities - University College London, DLSU and Xavier University - CDO. 

Engr. Sheena Fulleros, M.Eng. graduate of DLSU, Manila presented the paper on "Rapid Assessment of Hazards, Safety and Sustainability (RAHSS) of RC Buildings: Case Study Survey on Public Buildings in Sorsogon." The paper is based on her Practicum Report as researcher of CESDR DRU under Dr. Oreta. 


Engr. Dexter Lo, MSCE graduate of DLSU and Founding Director, XU Engineering Resource Center, Xavier University Manila  presented a paper on “Seismic Fragility of Selected Public High School Buildings in Cagayan de Oro City”, a paper also under the PRISMH Project.

CESDR Members at PASCDR - 1st Academic Conference 2019

CESDR Disaster Resilient Unit members, Dr. Andres Oreta and Dr. Lessandro Garciano attended the Philippine Academic Society for Climate and Disaster Resilience (PASCDR) Academic Conference with theme on "Strengthening the role of academe in climate and disaster resileince" held on November 27-28, 2019 at the University of the Philippines International Center for Public Administration. Dr. Garciano presented on "Initiatives and networking activities of Disaster Resilience Unit of CESDR" in the Session 4 on Enhancing Technologies fro Resilience Architecture, Engineering and Technology. Dr. Oreta served as moderator in this session.

Incidentally, DLSU faculty members, Dr. Marites Tiongco (Moderator of Session 5), Dr. Brian Gozun (Speaker in Session 5) and Dr. Marlon Era (Speaker of Session 2) also participated.



Prior to this conference, DLSU Faculty, Dr. Jonathan Dungca, Dr. Ann Dulay, Dr. Mike Promentilla, Dr. Bernardo Lejano, Dr. Andres Oreta and  Dr.Marites Tiongco attended the Forum on the 10th year Commemoratin of Typhoon Ondoy on 26 Sept 2019 at UP Manila, Museum of a History of Ideas. CESDR Disaster Resilience Unit Members at DRSD2019 - AIT

CESDR Disaster Resilience Unit members presented papers at the International Symposium on Disaster Resilience and Sustainable Development (DRSD 2019) held on March 7-8, 2019 at the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand. The CESDR members presented the following papers:

  • Developing teaching and learning modules for a disaster readiness and risk reduction subject –Authors: Renan Tanhueco (Presentor) and co-authors: Andres Oreta, Jose Edgar Mutuc, Edgar Vallar, Lessandro Garciano, Mary Geraldine Yumang and Efren DeLa Cruz
  • Identifying research interventions on resilience building using the ten essentials for “making cities resilient” global campaign – Authors: Andres Oreta (Presentor), and co-authors: Mario De Leon, Jose Edgar Mutuc, Renan Tanhueco, Lawrence Materum and Marla Redillas
  • Investigation on the potential of LID in urban land uses in the Philippines – Author/Presentor: Marla Redillas
  • Data visualization and analytics: a System Dynamics approach -  Author/Presentor: Jose Edgar Mutuc 
  • Sensor Node Positioning and Fractional Data Sampling for Risks Prevention, Recovery, and Adaptation of Wireless Sensor Networks to Different Disaster Scenarios – Author/Presentor: Lawrence Materum
The DRSD2019 was organized by the Disaster Preparedness, Mitigation and Management of AIT. It was also co-organized by the United Nations University, Prosper.net, Miyagi University of Education, Keio University, Universti Sains Malaysia and IRDR.

CESDR DRR-CCA members attend 7ICBR - Bangkok

CESDR subcenter on DRR-CCA members, Dr. Andres Oreta and Dr, Jose Edgar Mutuc attended the 7th International Conference on Building Resilience (7ICBR) held on November 26-29, 2017 in Bangkok, Thailand. Two papers with Dr. Oreta as co-author were presented -   First author, Dr. Joseph Juanzon presented the paper on  “An assessment on the effective preparedness and disaster response: The case of Santa Rosa City, Laguna.” while Dr. Oreta presented the paper co-authored with  Engr. Rizalyn Illumin  on “A Post-Disaster Functional Asset Value Index for School Buildings.”

Dr, Mutuc and his MSIE PhD advisee, M. Gutierrez presented their paper on "A model for humanitarian supply chain: an OR approach."

The conference is part of the activities under the URCO RPW on Building Resilient Cities & Communities. Hence, on November 28, 2017, a meeting with UK partners in the Newton Fund Research Links was held. Dr. Jose Edgar Mutuc and Dr. OretaI met Prof. Dilanthi Amaratungga, Prof. Richard Haigh and Dr. Ezri Hayat University of Huddersfield University (HUD) to discuss the incoming workshop on January 22-26, 2018 which will be held in Manila with CESDR members as the organisers. Dr. Mutuc and IDr. Oreta also attended the workshop on ESPRESSO – Enhancing disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation strategies for disaster prevention.

Disaster Resilience Through Science & Technology Papers at JAAP Symposium 2015




You are invited to attend the 3rd JAAP Research Symposium and General Assembly Meeting to be held on July 27, 2015 at SMX Mall of Asia. The event highlights keynote papers on the theme, “Disaster Resilience through Science and Technology.”

Prof. Akihiro Kijima, PhD of  the Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences, Tohoku University will present a paper on  The TEAMS (Tohoku Ecosystem-Associated Marine Science) Project: Restoring the Rich Ocean Through Science." The TEAMS Project is an attempt to scientifically investigate the impact of March 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami catastrophe on the ecosystems along the coastal and offshore areas of Iwate Prefecture to Miyagi Prefecture and assesses the changes of the ecosystems through the process of recovery.

Prof. Masashi Takahashi, MD, Professor and Director, Center for Disaster Medicine and Education Faculty of Medicine, Niigata University will present a paper on “New Information Technology for Disaster Medicine Using Geographic Information System in Japan.”
